The types of headphones, explained
Noise-cancelling headphones
Over-ear headphones that block out engines, crowds and office noise, with a comfortable fit for long sessions.
Good: Blocks most background noise; Comfortable for hours; Long battery, often 30 hours or more. Watch for: Bulkier than earbuds; Costs more at the top end; Can feel warm in summer.
Wireless earbuds
Small earbuds in a charging case, easy to carry, with good sound and often noise cancelling.
Good: Tiny and easy to carry; Great for commuting and calls; Work well with your phone. Watch for: Short battery per charge; Easy to lose; Noise cancelling is weaker than over-ear models.
Gaming headset
A headset with a boom microphone, tuned for games, with a comfortable fit for long sessions.
Good: Clear microphone for team chat; Comfortable over long sessions; Works with PC, console and phone. Watch for: Sound is tuned for games, not music; Bulkier; Wireless ones need a USB dongle.
Studio or hi-fi headphones
Wired or wireless headphones made for the best sound: for music lovers, mixing and critical listening.
Good: The best sound for the price; Wired models need no battery; Accurate and detailed. Watch for: Many have no noise cancelling; Some need an amplifier; Not made for commuting.
Sports earbuds
Secure, sweat-resistant earbuds built for running and the gym, some with open-ear designs for safety outdoors.
Good: Stay in place during workouts; Sweat and water resistant; Open-ear types let you hear traffic. Watch for: Sound is often less rich; Noise cancelling is weaker; Open-ear models leak sound.

Mistakes to avoid
- Paying for the top noise-cancelling model when your journey is quiet. A mid-range pair does the job.
- Choosing earbuds without checking the fit. Poor fit ruins both comfort and noise cancelling.
- Believing battery claims. Real life is usually 20 to 30 percent shorter with noise cancelling on.
- Buying without checking Bluetooth codecs for your phone, which affects sound and delay.
- Forgetting spare ear tips or pads, and the cost of replacing worn ones.
Check before you pay
- Independent tests of noise cancelling and microphone quality, not just the box claims
- Fit and comfort, ideally tried or with a good return policy
- Battery life with noise cancelling on, and fast charging
- Bluetooth version and codecs, and multipoint (connecting to two devices)
- Water and sweat resistance rating if you train in them
- The warranty, and whether the batteries can be replaced or repaired
