Which laptop should you buy in Egypt?
Laptops split into ultrabooks, gaming machines, workstations, Chromebooks and 2-in-1s. The right kind depends on what you do on it, how much you carry it and your budget. Answer a few questions and we tell you which kind to buy. Prices below are shown in EGP, roughly converted from US dollars, so check the shop's own price before you pay.
What to spend on laptops in Egypt
Entry level: under EGP 23,000
At this level, look for a Chromebook or a basic Windows laptop. Insist on a solid-state drive, at least 8 GB of memory and a screen that is not dim.
Mid range: EGP 23,000 to EGP 45,000
The sweet spot for most people. You get a good screen, 16 GB of memory, a long battery and a build that lasts several years.
Upper range: EGP 45,000 to EGP 80,000
You are paying for better screens, faster chips, lighter bodies and, for gamers, real graphics power. Worth it for daily work or creative use.
Premium: EGP 80,000 and more
Premium laptops give the best screens, the lightest builds or the strongest graphics. Only go here if you really use that power.
The types of laptop, explained
Ultrabook (thin and light laptop)
A slim, light laptop with a long battery, a good screen and enough power for everyday work. The default choice for most people.
Good: Light enough to carry every day; Long battery life; Quiet and cool for office work. Watch for: Not built for heavy gaming or 3D work; Fewer ports, and memory is often soldered so you cannot upgrade it.
Gaming laptop
A laptop with a strong graphics card and a fast screen for games and heavy creative work.
Good: Plays modern games well; Also good for video editing and 3D; Fast screens and plenty of ports. Watch for: Heavy, with short battery life away from the charger; Loud under load and often hot; Costs more than a normal laptop of the same speed.
Workstation laptop
A powerful, well-built laptop for professionals: video editing, 3D, engineering, big data. It focuses on stable performance and a good screen.
Good: Sustained high performance; Professional-grade screens and build; Upgradeable memory and storage on many models. Watch for: Expensive; Heavy and bulky; More than most people need.
Chromebook
A simple, cheap laptop that runs ChromeOS. It is quick to start, easy to use and great for browsing, documents and school.
Good: Low price; Simple, secure and fast to start; Long battery life. Watch for: Cannot run most Windows or Mac programs; Limited for heavy creative work or games; Best with an internet connection.
2-in-1 laptop
A laptop whose screen folds back or detaches into a tablet, usually with touch and pen support.
Good: Works as a laptop or a tablet; Good for notes, sketching and travel; Often light and slim. Watch for: Costs more than a plain laptop; Tablet mode is heavier than a real tablet; Keyboards can be shallower.

Mistakes to avoid
- Paying for a gaming laptop when you only browse and do office work. It is heavy and loud for no benefit.
- Buying a laptop with 4 GB or 8 GB of memory that cannot be upgraded. Aim for 16 GB if you can.
- Ignoring the screen. A dim or low-resolution screen ruins an otherwise good laptop.
- Trusting battery claims on the box. Look at independent battery tests, not the maker's best case.
- Buying a model with an old processor generation just because it is cheap and new in the shop.
Check before you pay
- Memory (16 GB is the sweet spot) and whether it can be upgraded
- A solid-state drive, and its size (512 GB is the practical minimum)
- The screen: brightness, resolution and whether it is a matte or glossy panel
- Real battery life from independent tests
- The ports you need (USB-C, HDMI, card reader) and whether the keyboard layout suits your language
- The warranty, who repairs it in your country, and the return policy
