What to spend on mattresses in United States
Entry level: under USD 300
At this level, a good spring or foam mattress is a fair choice. Check the thickness and the trial or return policy.
Mid range: USD 300 to USD 700
The sweet spot: a hybrid or quality foam mattress with a long trial period and a good warranty.
Upper range: USD 700 to USD 1,500
You get better materials, zoned support and cooling. Worth it if you sleep hot or have a partner.
Premium: USD 1,500 and more
Premium mattresses use natural latex, hand-built layers and the best edges. Only go here if you sleep badly on others.

Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing on firmness labels alone. Firmness feels different to each body weight.
- Not using the trial period. Sleep on it for at least a month.
- Buying a mattress without checking the base. A bad base wrecks a good mattress.
- Ignoring heat. Foam traps heat, and cooling matters if you sleep warm.
- Paying for gimmicks like gel layers without real reviews.
Check before you pay
- The firmness and how it matches your build and sleeping position
- The materials and the thickness of each layer
- The trial period, the return policy and the warranty
- Edge support and whether it suits your base
- Cooling and breathability
- The size and delivery, including the stairs
