The types of tv, explained
OLED TV
A TV where each pixel makes its own light, giving perfect blacks, wide viewing angles and the best picture in a dim room.

Budget LED TV
A basic LED TV at a low price. Good enough for everyday viewing, with a plainer picture.
Good: Lowest price; Fine for news, shows and kids; Easy to find in every size. Watch for: Weaker contrast and colour; Often slow smart TV software; Usually only 60 Hz, so not ideal for gaming.

Mistakes to avoid
- Buying on size alone. A smaller TV with a better panel often looks better than a bigger cheap one.
- Choosing OLED for a bright, sunny room. It can look dim and reflective there.
- Believing the "motion rate" numbers on the box. They are marketing, not real refresh rates.
- Relying on the built-in speakers. Most TVs sound thin, so budget for a soundbar.
- Ignoring smart TV software. A slow interface is annoying every day, and cheap sets get fewer updates.
Check before you pay
- The panel type, the real refresh rate (60 or 120 Hz) and the peak brightness from independent tests
- HDMI 2.1 ports and 120 Hz support if you game
- The smart TV system and whether the apps you use are available
- The viewing distance and room size for the screen you pick
- Wall mount compatibility and the stand's width
- The warranty, local service and the return policy
