Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a watch that does not work well with your phone. Apple Watches need iPhones, and some features need a matching phone.
- Paying for a sports watch when a band would do. Many people just want steps and sleep.
- Trusting health numbers as medical advice. They are good for trends, not diagnosis.
- Ignoring battery life. A watch you charge every night is one you sometimes forget to wear.
- Forgetting subscriptions. Some rings and bands charge monthly for their data.
Check before you pay
- Compatibility with your phone and the features that need it
- Battery life in real use, with GPS on if you train
- Water resistance rating, and swim tracking if you swim
- Whether it needs a subscription for health data
- Strap size and comfort (for rings, the exact size)
- The warranty and where it can be repaired
