The sweet spot: a mirrorless body with a kit lens, or a strong compact, gives photos far beyond a phone.

You get faster autofocus, better video and better lenses. Worth it if you shoot sports, wildlife or video.
Premium: GBP 1,750 and more

The types of camera, explained
Mirrorless camera
A camera with a large sensor and interchangeable lenses, giving the best photo and video quality and room to grow.
Good: Best image quality; Lenses you can change and upgrade; Fast autofocus and great video. Watch for: Larger and more expensive than a compact; Lenses add cost and weight; More to learn.
Compact camera
A pocket-size camera with a fixed lens, much better than a phone in zoom or sensor size, without the bulk of a system camera.
Good: Fits in a pocket; Simple and quick to use; Great for travel and street photos. Watch for: Fixed lens; Smaller sensors give less low-light quality; Fewer pro features.
Action camera
A small, tough camera that is waterproof and stabilised, made for sport, travel and first-person video.
Good: Waterproof and tough; Excellent stabilisation; Mounts on helmets, bikes and boards. Watch for: Small sensor, weaker in low light; Wide view only; Short battery life.

Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a camera with a huge zoom number and a tiny sensor. Sensor size matters more for quality.
- Forgetting lenses and accessories. A body alone is not a kit, and lenses can cost more than the camera.
- Buying a mirrorless camera when a phone and a compact would do what you really shoot.
- Ignoring size and weight. A camera that stays at home takes no photos.
- Not checking how the camera handles video heat and battery life if you film.
Check before you pay
- The sensor size, the lens mount and the lenses you can afford later
- Autofocus performance for the thing you shoot, from independent reviews
- Video features: 4K frame rates, stabilisation, microphone input and overheating
- Battery life and the cost of extra batteries and memory cards
- Weather sealing or waterproofing if you shoot outdoors
- The warranty, local service and whether it is a grey-market import
