Which camera should you buy in Egypt?
Cameras range from mirrorless cameras and compacts to action cameras. The right one depends on what you shoot, how much you carry and what you want to learn. Answer a few questions and we tell you which kind to buy. Prices below are shown in EGP, roughly converted from US dollars, so check the shop's own price before you pay.
What to spend on cameras in Egypt
Entry level: under EGP 18,000
A good action camera or a compact is the best value here. Check the stabilisation and battery life.
Mid range: EGP 18,000 to EGP 45,000
The sweet spot: a mirrorless body with a kit lens, or a strong compact, gives photos far beyond a phone.
Upper range: EGP 45,000 to EGP 110,000
You get faster autofocus, better video and better lenses. Worth it if you shoot sports, wildlife or video.
Premium: EGP 110,000 and more
Premium bodies and lenses are for professional work. Only go here if the camera earns its keep.
The types of camera, explained
Mirrorless camera
A camera with a large sensor and interchangeable lenses, giving the best photo and video quality and room to grow.
Good: Best image quality; Lenses you can change and upgrade; Fast autofocus and great video. Watch for: Larger and more expensive than a compact; Lenses add cost and weight; More to learn.
Compact camera
A pocket-size camera with a fixed lens, much better than a phone in zoom or sensor size, without the bulk of a system camera.
Good: Fits in a pocket; Simple and quick to use; Great for travel and street photos. Watch for: Fixed lens; Smaller sensors give less low-light quality; Fewer pro features.
Action camera
A small, tough camera that is waterproof and stabilised, made for sport, travel and first-person video.
Good: Waterproof and tough; Excellent stabilisation; Mounts on helmets, bikes and boards. Watch for: Small sensor, weaker in low light; Wide view only; Short battery life.

Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a camera with a huge zoom number and a tiny sensor. Sensor size matters more for quality.
- Forgetting lenses and accessories. A body alone is not a kit, and lenses can cost more than the camera.
- Buying a mirrorless camera when a phone and a compact would do what you really shoot.
- Ignoring size and weight. A camera that stays at home takes no photos.
- Not checking how the camera handles video heat and battery life if you film.
Check before you pay
- The sensor size, the lens mount and the lenses you can afford later
- Autofocus performance for the thing you shoot, from independent reviews
- Video features: 4K frame rates, stabilisation, microphone input and overheating
- Battery life and the cost of extra batteries and memory cards
- Weather sealing or waterproofing if you shoot outdoors
- The warranty, local service and whether it is a grey-market import
