Which phone should you buy in the UAE?
Phones range from budget models to flagships and foldables, and the right one depends on how long you keep it, how much you use the camera and which system you like. Answer a few questions and we tell you which kind to buy and what to look for. Prices below are shown in AED, roughly converted from US dollars, so check the shop's own price before you pay.
What to spend on phones in UAE
Entry level: under AED 950
Entry-level phones are good enough for messages, video and maps. Check how many years of updates are promised and how big the battery is, because that matters more than the chip.
Mid range: AED 950 to AED 2,050
This is where most people should shop. You get a good screen, a good battery and a decent camera, and last year's flagships often fall into this range.
Upper range: AED 2,050 to AED 3,700
You are paying for better cameras, brighter screens, faster charging and longer updates. Worth it if you take many photos or keep the phone for several years.
Premium: AED 3,700 and more
Premium phones are the maker's best, including foldables. The extra money buys small gains, so only go here if you want the best camera or a folding screen.
The types of phone, explained
Flagship phone
The maker's best phone: top cameras, a bright screen, the fastest chip and the longest software support. Also the most expensive.
Good: Best cameras and screens; Longest software updates, often 5 to 7 years; Holds its resale value best. Watch for: Prices of $1,000 or more; Often only a small step up from last year's model; Easy to overpay: last year's flagship is often the better deal.
Mid-range phone
A phone that gets 80 to 90 percent of the flagship experience for about half the price: good screen, good battery and a decent camera.
Good: The best value for most people; Smooth for daily use and social media; Often several years of updates. Watch for: Cameras weaker in low light; Slower charging or less water resistance on some models.
Budget phone
A low-cost phone covering calls, messages, video and basic photos. The compromises are in speed, cameras and how long it is supported.
Good: Cheapest way to get a working modern phone; Often big batteries; Good as a first or backup phone. Watch for: Slow with heavy apps and games; Short update promise, sometimes two years; Cameras often weak at night.
Foldable phone
A phone whose screen folds: either a book-style one that opens into a small tablet, or a flip-style one that folds small to fit a pocket.
Good: A tablet-size screen that fits in a pocket; A flip phone is very compact; Stands out. Watch for: Expensive and more fragile than a normal phone; A visible crease and thicker body; Batteries are usually smaller.
Rugged phone
A phone built to survive drops, dust, water and heavy work, with a thick body and a big battery.
Good: Survives drops, dust and water; Very long battery life; Good for work sites and outdoors. Watch for: Thick and heavy; Weaker cameras and slower chips for the price; Few come with long software support.

Mistakes to avoid
- Paying for a flagship when a mid-range phone or last year's flagship would do the same job.
- Ignoring the update promise. A cheap phone that stops getting security updates after two years costs more in the end.
- Buying on megapixels or marketing names. Compare real camera reviews instead.
- Buying a grey-market import with no local warranty because the price looks great.
- Forgetting the case and screen protector, or the extra cost of storage. Many phones cannot add storage later.
Check before you pay
- How many years of software and security updates the maker promises
- The battery size and independent battery tests, not just the spec sheet
- The warranty: official local warranty and whether the phone works on your country's networks (including 5G bands)
- Storage: 128 GB is the practical minimum, and most phones cannot add more later
- Water and dust resistance rating if you carry it everywhere
- The return policy and whether the phone is sold sealed and new, not refurbished or imported
